Alberta creating provincial hate crimes unit: Notley

Mar 15, 2019 | 3:47 PM

Premier Rachel Notley says Alberta is creating a provincial hate crimes unit.

She says the unit of police and Crown prosecutors will focus exclusively on investigating the proliferation of hate groups and hate crimes in the province.

Notley says people must work together to fight against racism, hate, intolerance and religious persecution, including Islamophobia.

Creating a provincial hate crimes unit was one of the recommendations in a government report released last June.

The government says there is a police-reported hate crime in Alberta about once every three days.
