Event in support of eliminating racism being held this week

An event to help reduce racial discrimination is taking place in the Swan City.

The event will happen at Teresa Sargent Hall in the Montrose Cultural Centre on March 21.

Community Development Coordinator Tammy Wentzell says it will feature presentations and performances from local community groups, and the co-founder of a global non-profit organization will be the keynote speaker.

“It’s a free event, so we’re not doing registration. We’re hoping many people from our community can come out and enjoy the event,” says Wentzell. “As well, we’re having a keynote speaker which is Carla Cuglietta. She will speak about what divides and connects communities by sharing inspiring stories from around the world.”

Cuglietta is the Co-Founder of a global non-profit organization called YoungLeaders.World. Her keynote speech begins at 1:30 p.m.

Other presentations and performances at the event will include:

Ejibola Adetokunbo-Taiwo and Juliet Onun of W.E Hustle in Heels will be making a presentation. W.E Heels is a platform that provides female entrepreneurs and immigrant women an avenue to connect.

The Odyssey House’s Madi Wrzosek will also be presenting. She will be speaking on how different racial and ethnic backgrounds may relate to violence, what healthy relationships and balanced gender roles look like, and what kinds of violence are considered abusive within Canadian Law.

Another presentation will be by the Chief Innovator of Change Avenue, Natalia Madden. She will share her story about immigrating from Mexico and making Canada home.

Threza Schlenkrich and the Red Feather Metis Dancers will be performing at the event, too.

The function kicks off at 1 p.m. and runs until 5 p.m.
