Kenney claims information sharing not unusual amongst party leadership candidates

The leader of Alberta’s Opposition United Conservative Party says it’s not unusual for competing campaigns to share information during a leadership race.

Jason Kenney told talk radio station CHED that staff on his leadership campaign communicated with staff on Jeff Callaway’s campaign during the UCP race in 2017.

But he says he offered absolutely no financial support to Callaway.

He says if there are questions about financial irregularities, he hopes authorities get to the bottom of it.

Documents leaked over the weekend show Kenney’s deputy chief of staff gave Callaway’s organizers talking points, speech and policy advice in attacking Kenney’s rival candidate, Brian Jean.

Callaway later dropped out of the campaign and endorsed Kenney, who went on to beat Jean and become leader of the UCP.
