Signing a new Metis harvesting agreement a mistake: Alberta Fish and Game Association

Mar 21, 2019 | 3:34 PM

The Alberta Fish and Game Association says the provincial government’s decision to sign a new Metis harvesting agreement is a mistake.

The association says the deal signed last week will give Metis in the northern half of the province unlimited rights to hunt, trap or fish for food year-round.

President Brian Dingreville says the association is concerned the deal will affect the long-term survival of some wildlife.

The agreement was signed by Environment Minister Shannon Phillips and Audrey Poitras, president of the Metis Nation of Alberta.

The deal say discussions on extending Metis hunting rights in southern Alberta will be held in the future.
