NWJHL Final

Huskies claim second straight NWJHL title

Mar 24, 2019 | 7:23 AM

The Fort St. John Huskies are the 2018-2019 Northwest Junior Hockey League champions, following an 8-1 thumping of the County of Grande Prairie JDA Kings on Saturday, taking the title in six games.

That is the second straight championship for the Huskies and seventh title overall, now the most in NWJHL history, passing the North Peace Navigators.

The scoring got started late in the first, with Jared Winkel making it 1-0 for the visitors with 2:27 left in the period. Alex Nimmo added to that lead just 21 seconds later, giving the Huskies a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.

The Kings cut the lead to one after Jaiden LaPorte scored on the power play midway through the second. The Kings continued to press, but the Huskies ended the frame up by two once again with Geoff Dick scoring with just 32 seconds left in the frame.

Fort St. John would completely take over in the third, thanks in large part to Gary Loewen and Brady Marzocco.

Loewen scored just 39 seconds into the final period and added two more for a natural hat trick. Marzocco assisted on all three of Loewen’s goals.

Loewen would then return the favour, feeding Marzocco for his lone goal of the game to make it 7-1 on a power play just over the midway point of the period.

Winkel would add his second of the game on another power play just over a minute later, assisted by Loewen and Marzocco. That capped off a five-goal outburst for the Huskies in the third.

Loewen finished the games with three goals and three assists, while Marzocco had a goal and four assists, all coming in the third period.

Despite the loss, the Kings will continue their season along with the Huskies next week at the Provincial Junior ‘B’ Championships in Wetaskiwin, running April 4-7.
