RCMP warns about increased phone scams

Grande Prairie RCMP say they have been receiving increased reports from residents regarding fraudulent Canada Revenue Agency phone calls and would like to warn the public.

Multiple reports from residents in the area say they have received phone calls from individuals claiming to be representatives from the Canada Revenue Agency.

In the reported cases, individuals are called and pressured to disclose personal information about themselves over the phone to the representative claiming to work for the Canada Revenue Agency.

Some extreme cases reported say the representative also requested money from the individual and went as far as to threaten that police would arrest them if they did not pay.

RCMP would like the public to be aware of these types of incidents and have provided cautionary safety tips to assist with incident prevention.

Safety tips include;

• Do not share personal information over the phone.
• Be aware of unsolicited calls.
• Don’t feel pressured to make a quick decision.
• Find the actual phone number through a trusted source and call the department directly.
• Be aware of your own personal situation.
