New rules planned for Grande Prairie transit buses

Mar 26, 2019 | 3:16 PM

Planning is underway which would allow rules for riding public transit to be posted inside buses.

The idea was proposed at a city committee meeting on Tuesday by Transit Manager Steve Harvard.

Harvard explains having regulations posted for riders to see is expected to help improve the safety and comfort of passengers, and provides more support to transit operators.

“It provides a set of rules and regulations with consequences for the passengers. And as I mentioned during the meeting, it provides transit operators a level of support, that they don’t have to be on the frontline, they aren’t personally making the decisions or the rules,” says Harvard.

Harvard notes the proposed changes include allowing Peace Officers to respond to calls on public transit; currently only RCMP can respond.

Another part of the proposed plan was to incur a fee to those who break certain rules on the bus, however, more planning needs to be done before that change is made official.

Harvard says the city’s transit operators have no issues with the proposed plan.

“When I first came on board with the city I brought a lot of information,” says Harvard. “I’ve been in the transit industry for over 20 years. It’s something that I sat down with the operators and said ‘this is something I’d like to see here, what are your thoughts?’ And they were certainly very supportive of it. They see the need for it, and they see the benefits.”

More planning is needed before any of the changes are made official.

Harvard says he will be bringing a revised plan to a future Community Living Committee meeting.
