In the Woods Animal Rescue in need of help

Mar 27, 2019 | 11:50 AM

In the Woods Animal Rescue from Nampa is operating at maximum capacity. To help find new homes for animals, the non-profit is hosting a Meet and Greet Adoption Event in Dawson Creek April 6 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. An online silent auction is also set to take place ahead of the event.

“You can meet your animal. Meet the In the Woods staff and then the animals can actually go home with you that day,” says Tracy Strasky, Committee Member for In the Woods Animal Rescue.

In the Woods Animal Rescue is a non-profit organization started by Sheryl Woods and Maurice Fournier six years ago. The husband and wife duo take care of cats and dogs who suffer from abuse, starvation or abandonment. They work to re-home animals and treat them medically if need be.

The group operates through assistance received from volunteers as well as through monetary and pet supply donations.

The organization rarely turns animals away. In their six years of operation, they have successfully re-homed 4,000 dogs and 500 cats.

Due to the high volume of animals through their doors, In the Woods Animal Rescue needs help. They often operate at maximum capacity but with spring’s arrival, that number is expected to increase as breeding season approaches and with it so does an influx of more animals in need of care.

Strasky says the group constantly struggles to keep up with demands, especially, with the costly medical needs of animals.

“Since I’ve been involved in the last roughly two years, they always seem to be at capacity. Once they get an animal out, there seems to be more coming in, so they’re usually sitting with 120 cats, kittens and 80 dogs. They don’t refuse too many animals,” said Strasky.

Strasky first got involved when she adopted one of her now two rescue dogs. Learning about the dire needs of the organization and understanding the needs of rescue animals having taken care of some herself is what drew her to get more involved.

Although the organization is located in Nampa, it has scheduled its Adoption Event for Dawson Creek due to the high demand for interest in animals from that area online.

Rescue animals up for adoption will be brought to the event. Adoptions can be done on site and animals can be taken home directly from the event.

“We’re looking at bringing probably around 20 dogs. We’re going to feel out our demand but 20 dogs and fully vaccinated puppies and then cats but it’s a little bit more stressful to bring cats so we’re probably going to have 8-10 cats and kittens.”

Ahead of the event, online posts of the animals set to attend will be published. Posts will include photos and descriptions so that people can get to know the animals a bit better in advance.

“People will be able to see the animals that will be coming and who will be available for adoption and then you can do pre-adoption forms right on there at In the Woods Animal Rescue website.”

The event will feature a barbeque, free photographed pet portraits and a silent auction.

“We are taking silent auction items. If anyone wants to donate to the silent auction, we’d be happy to pick (the item) up,” said Strasky.

The silent auction is scheduled to begin April 4 online here and ends April 5 at 9 p.m. The auction will then resume in person during the event until its 3 p.m. conclusion. All proceeds go directly to the animals.

“We would welcome anybody to come down, say ‘Hi’ and maybe meet your new best friend or just see what In the Woods is all about. It’s a great cause and they certainly need the help.”

Monetary donations and pet supplies will also be accepted. The event will be held at the Aspol Ford building, located at 1125 102 Avenue in Dawson Creek, B.C.
