GPRC undergoing self-assessment as part of degree-granting process

The GPRC is making progress on its path to becoming degree-granting.

President and CEO of GPRC Don Gnatiuk says the process to becoming degree-granting started a year ago, and the next step is to complete an assessment of the campus.

“A big part of it is about readiness. We’re going through a self-assessment and we have to submit our self-evaluation through the Campus Alberta Quality Council,” says Gnatiuk. “Self-assessment deals with everything from labs, classrooms, financial processes, libraries, policies, procedures, services, and so forth.”

Gnatiuk says a peer assessment of GPRC’s programming also must be made.

The college is currently considering three possible degrees, being Bachelor of Science and Computer Science, Bachelor of Arts and Psychology, and a Bachelor of Education. The Bachelor of Education degree would have a secondary route that would evolve into a combined 5-year Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education Degree which would allow the graduate to be qualified for both primary and secondary teaching environments.

“We’re close to finalizing these. We haven’t put them through our final paces yet, but it’s looking quite likely to be the next degrees,” says Gnatiuk.

Gnatiuk notes he is pleased with the community input that was provided when the college reached out to the public for feedback on which degrees should be offered.

“It was really heartening to see the enthusiasm of our community as they came forward and helped us determine what degrees are on the landscape for us. I’m very pleased and I thank our community for coming forward and helping us with that decision making.”

He adds the self-assessment process is starting right now, and he’s hopeful the degrees will be launched in the fall of 2020.
