Midget Elite Storm drop first two games of Provincials

Mar 29, 2019 | 7:42 AM

Day one of the 2019 Midget Elite Provincials is in the books at the Coca-Cola Centre and fans were treated to some great hockey on the opening day.

The tournament opened Thursday morning when the GPFAC Storm took on the Calgary Fire Red.

It was a back and forth, tight contest between the two clubs with both goaltenders playing well.

However, when all was said and done it was Calgary earning a 2-0 win to open the tournament.

The 2nd game of the day saw the other Calgary team, the Fire White earn a 2-1 win over the St.Albert Sharks in a shootout.

Day 1 of the tournament wrapped up with a re-match from the 2nd round of the playoffs just two weeks prior when the Storm battled the Sherwood Park Fury.

Despite playing in their 2nd game of the day, the Storm still had plenty of pep in their step to battle their rivals from Sherwood Park.

The tight checking, physical contest needed extra time where Tayler Premak played hero for the Fury who walked away with the 3-2 overtime win.

Christina Friesen and Josee Stewart found the back of the net for the Storm in the loss.

The Storm are now 0-1-1 in the round robin.

They will look for their 1st win of the tournament Friday morning when they battle the St.Albert Sharks at 11:45 a.m.

Other games Friday include the two Calgary clubs facing off at 9:00 a.m., Sherwood Park faces the Calgary Fire White at 3:00 p.m., and the day concludes with Calgary Fire Red facing St.Albert at 6:15 p.m.
