Tumbler Ridge positively impacted by replica “Iron Throne”

Tumbler Ridge has seen a number of visitors flocking to it after a replica “Iron Throne” was discovered in its Global Geopark.

The throne was placed in Tumbler Ridge as part of a promotion for the final season of Game of Thrones, where six replica iron thrones were placed in secret locations throughout the globe.

Coordinator with Tumbler Ridge Global Geopark Jenna McQueen says the discovery has impacted Tumbler Ridge positively, in more ways than one.

“It’s been just a huge jump for the economy itself,” says McQueen. “I think everybody in town has retained this pride with it, so it’s great for the morale of the community members as well.”

Since the discovery, McQueen says close to 4800 people have come to visit the throne, and that’s just the people who took photos sitting on it.

“That doesn’t count how many people came and just took pictures of the throne because of five to six hour wait times. We’ve seen record numbers in the visitors centre, not only for this time of year, but for any weekend.”

She notes the majority of visitors came from the Peace Region, but there were also a number of people who traveled to Tumbler Ridge from places such as Calgary, Victoria, and even Alaska.

The throne was dismantled on Sunday evening.
