A glimpse at road construction projects taking place after May long weekend

Crews with the city have another busy summer ahead of them as work is set to begin on improving roads sometime after May long weekend.

The City’s Capital Construction Supervisor Mark Hoseasson says one of the bigger projects the city plans to tackle this summer takes place on 104 Avenue.

“We have basically, a reconstruction of a full road of 104th Ave between Landing Drive and 92nd Street that’s going to be happening this summer,” says Hoseasson. “That’s a project where they will be removing the entire roadway, the sidewalks, digging it all out and basically rebuilding it from the bottom up. That one is also going to be fully redone with street lighting as it was identified as being substandard for street lighting.”

Another major project for this summer that Hoseasson highlights is on 108 Street. That project entails work being done between 84 Street and 76 Avenue. He says a mill and fill overlay will be taking place, along with installing a concrete pad in the area of 108 Street and 84 Avenue to address a rutting issue.

Hoseasson notes plenty of road work is also expected to be taking place in the Gateway area.

“We’re doing a lot of roads within the Gateway area. It’s a little less impactful than a full reconstruction, it’s a combination of overlays and then some of them are getting what we call a full depth reclamation.”

Hoseasson says a full depth reclamation involves pulverizing the asphalt into the road base, mixing it, then trimming it down to allow for new layers of asphalt that will be put back on top. After it’s trimmed, the pulverizer will make a second path and inject asphalt and cement into it, strengthening the road. Then, new asphalt gets put on top. He says plenty of other roads have had full depth reclamations throughout the city in the past few years, and this method is much less disruptive than a full reconstruction.

While these are some of the bigger projects crews will be working on this summer, Hoseasson says road work will also be taking part in other areas of the city where it’s needed, and the City has created a tool to help keep residents up to date on road projects.

Hoseasson adds because these projects are still in the tendering stage, no timelines have been put in place.
