ASIRT investigating police shooting incident at Eckville oil field site

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has taken over the investigation into an incident on Saturday in Eckville.

Sylvan Lake RCMP originally responded around 8:15 a.m. to an oil field site on 54 Avenue in Eckville where a battery had reportedly been stolen.

Police arrived to find a male suspect asleep in a truck.

There was a sledgehammer and large canister of bear spray on the front seat.

A member laid a spike belt out and waited for backup, but a confrontation ensued between the suspect and the member.

The member then discharged his pistol.

The suspect was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The member was not injured.

There is no concern for public safety, police say.
