Election 2019

DUNFIELD, Shannon (New Democratic Party)

Apr 9, 2019 | 1:20 PM

1. Why should eligible voters cast a ballot for you?

One of the things my Elders taught me was to watch, listen and learn. I believe this is important as someone who wants to represent Grande Prairie – Wapiti because our people and our communities need to be heard. I watched and listened to Rachel Notley – she stands up for our families, for our province and for our energy industry. And I’ve learned that who we elect makes a difference, especially after previous governments neglected our region for so long.

The reason eligible voters should cast a ballot for me is because my experience in health, education, not for profit and volunteerism at the local, regional and provincial level is something I believe the communities and people of Grande Prairie – Wapiti could relate to and support.

I was born in, raised, and lived in this area all my life. My family history is one in which my First Nation ancestors have walked this land since time immemorial. On my Métis side, my family is some of the earliest people to settle Grande Prairie and area. I feel this is important to share because I want Grande Prairie – Wapiti communities to know that I am tied to this land through my ancestors and through this connection have a deep love for our area.

2. If elected, what is the first thing you would want to accomplish?

If elected, one of the first things I would want to accomplish is to have community consultations. I would love the opportunity listen and learn from our people and communities on what they feel is important. If elected, I feel this is a great way in which to engage with our communities to build a trusting relationship where they know that I am there to represent them at the legislature. I would also like to work with our communities to share what Rachel and our government would be doing moving forward. Some of our plan includes eliminating prescription drug costs for seniors; helping first time home buyers; capping child care fees at $25 per day; and bringing clean water to First Nation communities.

This election is the most important election we have in Alberta right now. My dream is that Grande Prairie – Wapiti seizes the opportunity and votes in favour of one Alberta in which I am your Grande Prairie – Wapiti MLA.

My name is Shannon Dunfield and I am your Grande Prairie – Wapiti Candidate for NDP.
