Election candidates at Odyssey House tonight for Lift Her Up event

Apr 10, 2019 | 12:57 PM

A free event is being held at Odyssey House tonight which will feature candidates from Grande Prairie, Grande Prairie-Wapiti and Central Peace-Notley.

The event is called Lift Her Up and is aimed at putting women’s issues in the spotlight, and calls on candidates to commit to respecting and supporting women.

Odyssey House Executive Director Ebony Rempel says Lift Her Up is part of a province-wide political movement of women’s shelters.

“Basically, what we’re asking is for all potential candidates to come to the shelter, have some conversations and learn a little bit more about what we do, and at the end of the day, sign a commitment, and basically the commitment is suggesting they’re going to make spaces for women in politics, and ensure that women and all candidates regardless of gender are treated with respect,” says Rempel.

Rempel explains this isn’t the first time Odyssey House has held an event like this, stating the organization held a similar event during the 2017 municipal election. During that meeting, city council members and school board trustees were invited to Odyssey House for a similar purpose as tonight’s event.

Lift Her Up will also be highlighting provincial milestones, and the focus is going to be on second stage shelters. Rempel notes all perspective candidates have been invited, and many have said they will be at the event.

Anyone interested in attending is asked to contact Odyssey House at 780-538-1332, or email development@odysseyhouse.ca.

The event runs from 6 – 8 p.m.
