Unofficial results released and more than 71% of eligible Alberta voters cast a ballot

The votes have been counted and according to Elections Alberta, the unofficial voter turnout for the recent provincial election is 71.1% based on 1,880,508 votes cast and 2,643,453 registered electors.

The United Conservative Party won a majority government with 63 ridings including the Grande Prairie, GP Wapiti and Central Peace Notley ridings.

With 24 seats, the New Democratic Party will become the Official Opposition and Rachel Notley will stay on as leader.

The Alberta Party and Alberta Liberals were wiped off the electoral map. The Alberta Party held three seats at dissolution, the Liberals one.

Outgoing Premier Notley and Premier elect Jason Kenney met briefly Thursday Government House in Edmonton Thursday to discuss the transition of power.

She said after the meeting that her government will do everything it can to ensure a smooth handover but in opposition will hold the UCP to account on pipelines, jobs and its promise to protect public services.

Kenney and his party are to be sworn in on April 30th and the legislature is to resume sitting a few weeks later.
