Earth Day

City and County to team up for Earth Day celebration and awareness

Apr 22, 2019 | 7:00 AM

Today is Earth Day, but the City and County of Grande Prairie will hold an event to mark the occasion April 27.

A Community Celebration and Tradeshow will take place at the Montrose Cultural Centre.

April 27 will also mark the start of the annual City Scrub, where people volunteer 20 minutes of time to pick up garbage. It will run from the 27th through May 3.

The City’s Jessica Foley says the theme this year will be Energy, Trees, Less Garbage Please!

“We thought it was a good pairing with what we’re rolling into with City Scrub. We’re trying to focus on energy, trees, and the less garbage comes into play with City Scrub.”

She adds they want to show people that small changes can make a difference.

“Just changing some of your behaviours that you do at home. So, instead of purchasing plastic (sandwich) bags, for example, using ones that are re-useable that you can be able to wash that you can get several uses out of and to try and cut single use plastics out of your day-to-day.”

Foley says everyone in the community plays a part in being environmentally responsible.

“We’re all stewards of the Earth, so we all have that responsibility to keep things clean and to partake in things that can help better the Earth for years to come.”

The event will include a live artist making a sculpture out of things usually thrown away. There will also be family activities and various displays on being environmentally friendly. It will run April 27 from Noon to 4 p.m.
