Fort St. John RCMP arrest two following attempt theft of multiple ATMs

Fort St. John RCMP have arrested two men following the attempted theft of an ATM from a gas station in the city.

Just before 5 a.m. PDT on April 20, police responded to reports of a suspicious pickup truck with a tow rope on the tailgate. The truck was seen leaving a gas station on 96A Avenue in Fort St. John.

Officers arrived on scene to see a window smashed in and an ATM that had been ripped from the wall. RCMP later located the vehicle, which rammed a police vehicle in an attempt to flee. The vehicle was later halted after police successfully used a tire deflation device in a residential area in the nearby community of Taylor.

Both suspects tried to flee on foot but failed. The passenger of the truck was caught hiding in the grass by Police Dog Services.

The driver, Douglas Goodings, is facing charges of Break and Enter, Flight from Police, Assault of a Peace Officer with a Weapon and two counts of Fail to Comply with Recognizance. The passenger was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

“The Fort St John RCMP is glad that nobody was injured in this incident,” said Cst. Chad Neustaeter of the Fort St John RCMP, in a release. “Through the frontline officer’s cooperative efforts, both these men were arrested and brought into police custody.”

Goodings is also facing additional Break and Enter and Breach of Recognizance charges stemming from an additional attempted ATM theft that happened around 3:30 in the morning on April 19, also at another gas station on the west side of Fort St John. He remains in police custody and will appear in court at a later date.

RCMP say the investigation is ongoing and additional charges may follow.
