Day of Mourning

GPASC host event to mourn those lost and injured in workplace tragedies

Apr 25, 2019 | 5:42 PM

An event to mourn those lost or seriously injured in workplace tragedies will be held Friday morning by Grande Prairie and Area Safe Communities.

The ceremony will be held at the Safe Communities office at 10318 92 Street starting at 10:45. A moment of silence will follow at 11, with refreshments being offered following that.

“This ceremony helps remember those we have lost, but also helps us to really look at how we can prevent injury and how we can keep these people in our community and around us, so we can enjoy having them with us,” said Acting Executive Director Cindy Blinston with GPASC.

The National Day of Mourning is held annually on April 28, but the organization wants to host the event before Sunday so more people can attend.

The event is free and open to the public. Anyone who is interested in adding a plaque in remembrance of someone they have lost due to a workplace tragedy can do so by contacting GPASC directly at 780-402-2818 or director@gpsafecomunities.com. Attendees can also speak at the ceremony or submit a poem or story if they wish, but should contact the organization first.

GPASC was formed in 1997 by both Alberta Labour and the Grande Prairie and District Chamber of Commerce, to bring together local agencies to help promote safer work places. They offer educational programs for schools, as well as many public programs in areas such as car seat safety and home alone education. Check out their website to see the full range of programs they offer.
