Second-degree murder charge for man accused of fatally beating cellmate

Apr 26, 2019 | 12:14 PM

A man accused of fatally beating his cellmate at the Calgary Remand Centre has been convicted of second-degree murder.

Marlon Ledesma had been charged with first-degree murder in the September 2016 death of Alvin Chiniquay.

A judge found Ledesma guilty of the lesser charge, ruling that it would be speculation to find that he planned to kill Chiniquay.

Ledesma’s trial earlier this month heard that Chiniquay died in hospital after he was assaulted twice.

A hearing to determine parole eligibility will be held later this year.
