Conference on domestic violence attracts 100

A conference on domestic violence called the HEART Conference attracted 100 people to Valleyview earlier this week.

MD of Greenview FCSS Manager Lisa Hannaford and says domestic violence is a pervasive problem that can be found everywhere.

“It is an elephant in the room. People don’t like to talk about it, but it’s one of those rocks that, to be a healthier community and individual and society, you have tot take a look to see what’s happening under that rock.”

Hannaford says community leaders and front-line workers from around the North attended to conference.

She adds Alberta usually in the top three among Canada’s provinces when it comes to domestic violence and that there are many reasons for that.

“One of them is society’s culture and attitude and beliefs and how it is okay, it has been okay, in our culture to, with our language and our actions, think of women as inferior.”

Hannaford says front-line workers were given a number of things to take back to their communities. One of those was Breakfast with the Guys, an event that has been held in Grande Prairie for several years. She says it has already had a big impact on some of those who attended the conference.

“One of them said, ‘You know, I didn’t know that women were so afraid of men.’ He’s always considered himself a gentleman, and is very much so a gentleman, but it created understanding.”

The conference took place Wednesday and Thursday.
