Grass fire in Peace River extinguished; cause being investigated

May 10, 2019 | 9:15 AM

A grass fire in Peace River on Thursday afternoon has been fully extinguished, but the Fire Commissioner’s office says the RCMP are investigating as the cause of the blaze has been deemed suspicious.

At around 1:50 p.m. yesterday, Northern Sunrise County Protective Services were called to the hills west of the Twelve Foot Davis Gravesite. A pickup truck had caught on fire in the area, and strong winds spread the flames to surrounding grass and bushes.

The fire was contained by 3:30 p.m. and fully extinguished by around 7:25 that evening, thanks to help from the Peace River Fire Department, the County of Northern Lights Fire Department and a helicopter from Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. A total of 3.4 hectares of vegetation was burned, but no structures were affected, and no injuries occurred due to the blaze.
