Court update: Robbery and stabbing cases lead to jail sentences

May 16, 2019 | 5:30 AM

Alberta Justice says a man arrested after a hold up last summer at the Jackpot Grill has been given jail time.

Justin Keith Starratt pleaded guilty to a charge of using an imitation firearm and a reduced count of theft under $5000 May 8 in Grande Prairie court. He had originally been charged with robbery with a firearm.

Starratt was given a total sentence of 18-months in jail; 12 months on the first charge and six months on the second. He will get 13 months credit for time already spent in custody.

RCMP said on July 30 last year, at just before 6 p.m., a man went into the Jackpot with what appeared to be a firearm, took an undisclosed amount of money, and ran away.

Starratt was arrested three days later.

Jail time after 2018 stabbing

Alberta Justice says a Manning man charged after a stabbing in Grande Prairie has been given jail time.

Rex Parenteau was given a sentence of one year plus one day on a charge of assault with a weapon May 8 in Grande Prairie court.

Another assault with a weapon count was withdrawn while a stay of proceedings is in place on a possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose charge.

RCMP said police and paramedics were called to a north end hotel on March 15 last year after another man, also from Manning, suffered a stab wound. He was taken to hospital with what were described as serious injuries.
