Dale Smith appointed as new Reeve for M.D. of Greenview

With Dale Gervais stepping down as Reeve of the M.D. of Greenview, councillor Dale Smith has been appointed to the role.

Smith has served as the councillor for Ward 5-New Fish Creek since 2013 and has been a part of many municipal boards in that time. Prior to joining council, Smith worked for 35 years as a Range Agrologist for Alberta Sustainable Resource Development and has run a family beef ranching operation with his wife, Judy in the New Fish Creek area.

He says his main goal as Reeve is to continue moving forward on projects they’ve started, but now taking the reigns in a leadership role.

“It’s going to be a busy time ahead. It’s a large M.D. with lots of projects on the go. Our budget is healthy, I guess is the way to put it, both in operating and in capital expenses,” said Smith. “(I’m) just trying to… guide the ship of the members there ahead.”

Some of those projects he looks to keep moving forward on are the paving of the Forestry Trunk Road, the Tri-Municipal Partnership with the County of Grande Prairie and the City of Grande Prairie and the consolidation of the former Town of Grande Cache into the M.D.

“Plus, all of our other rate payers, whether they’re getting new water systems or wastewater and everyday things, down to gravelling our roads,” said Smith. “There is just a lot of projects and everyday things that need to be carried forward.”

Smith also took the time to thank Gervais for his six plus years of service as Reeve and says he learned a lot about the job from him.

“He was in tune with ratepayers, towns, our two towns that we have there now,” said Smith. “He had great ideas to move the M.D. of Greenview forward and I think that’s where we’re continuing.”

The change was effective as of May 9, 2019.
