Peace Region farmers making progress on seeding

May 17, 2019 | 1:16 PM

The May 14 crop report from Alberta Agriculture shows that seeding progress across the Peace is way ahead of last year’s pace.

The report says progress on major crops moved from an average of 2.4 percent to 29 percent planted in a week. Just point-nine percent of the crop was in this time last year, with the five year average at 11.6 percent.

Just under 47 percent of peas, 39 percent of spring wheat, 21 percent of the barley, 19.6 percent of canola, and 18 percent of the oats has gone in.

The report also says soil moisture is reported as poor in three percent of the land surveyed and excessive in 11 percent. The rest is rated fair, good, or excellent.

Some places got rain this week that others did not see. Grande Prairie got over 12 and a half centimetres of snow May 3.

Across Alberta, seeding was 42 percent complete as of Tuesday, with two-thirds of the crop already planted in southern Alberta.
