County chopping down some pine beetle-killed trees

The County of Grande Prairie plans to thin out some trees infested by mountain pine beetles.

Community Services Director Dan Lemieux says this is being done in an area close to Evergreen Park.

“We’ll have contractors working on a land area just north of PARDS and the Evergreen Park area. They will removing dead, pine beetle-infested trees from about a 20 acre pine stand. It’s a continuation of our work to try and reduce the fuel load in the Grande Prairie region.”

The spot is between PARDS and the Pine Valley South subdivision.

Lemieux adds as many dead trees as possible will be cut down.

“So, we’re not taking down any live trees, we’re just removing the (pine beetle)-infested dead trees.”

Lemieux is asking people to avoid the area while this takes place.

“The area will be well-marked with signage, so we’re asking people to respect the signage and stay away from those areas for the time being.”

The work was scheduled to start Tuesday. Lemieux says the the work is expected to last until mid-June, weather permitting.
