GPREP called in to help with High Level wildfire

May 21, 2019 | 7:04 AM

The Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership (GPREP) has been activated to assist with the High Level fire.

Thousands of people are out of their homes near High Level, after a threatening wildfire crept within three kilometres of the town line.

Four-thousand residents of High Level were ordered to evacuate their homes late yesterday afternoon, followed hours later by a similar order for 750 First Nation residents of the nearby Bushe River Reserve.

The Chuckegg Creek fire has been burning for days, but grew substantially between Sunday and yesterday to 69-thousand hectares in size.

GPREP deployed resources including fire engines, structural protection unit and 14 firefighters.

Reception centres for evacuees have been set up in High Prairie and Slave Lake and the Emergency Coordination Centre is currently preparing for evacuees in the Grande Prairie region if needed.

The main concern for provincial fire authorities now is a change in wind direction.

GPREP was contacted by the Province of Alberta Monday requesting possible assistance.

Alberta Premier Jason Kenny will be providing an update on the fire Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m.
