Province brings in fire bans, OHV restrictions

May 22, 2019 | 5:08 PM

The province says fire bans and off-highway vehicle restrictions are now in place in forest protection areas across most of northern Alberta, including the Grande Prairie Forest Area.

Existing fire permits are cancelled and new ones are not being issued.

Off-highway vehicles are not allowed on public lands and provincial parks while the ban is in place, even if there are designated trails.

The province says off-highway vehicles include quads, side-by-sides, dirt bikes, 4×4 Jeeps, pick-ups and SUVs.

Tickets for violating the ban cost $575. Anyone starting a fire could be liable to pay for the cost of putting it out.

The restriction does not apply to private or agricultural land use or usage for industry, institutions like schools, and emergency responses.
