High Level wildfire update May 23

May 23, 2019 | 9:32 AM

An out-of-control wildfire in northwestern Alberta continues to move away from the town of High Level.

But the Chuckegg Creek blaze remains about three kilometres away from the community as firefighters take measures to prevent it from getting closer.

Flammable material near homes such as patio furniture is being removed from yards.

Crews have also used a contained burn to create barriers to prevent the 92,000 hectare wildfire from spreading.

Meanwhile, about five-thousand people remain out of their homes and High Level Mayor Crystal McAteer says residents won’t be returning anytime soon.

Yukon government officials report large parts of their territory are now experiencing smoke from the blaze.
