Industrial oil contamination results in closure of Sportsplex Pond

May 27, 2019 | 11:36 AM

The fishing pond out at the Crosslink County Sportsplex will be closed until further notice.

Parks and Recreation Manager with the County of Grande Prairie Christine Rawlins reveals how they were notified of a contaminant in the pond.

“We were advised on Thursday (May 23rd) by a member of the public that was fishing at the pond that they had noticed an unusual product on their fishing line and there was a sheen on the water. Myself and another member of staff went over and we determined that a contaminant had reached the pond.”

Both County crews and environmental protection specialists are on the scene of the pond dealing with the contamination which was caused by illegal disposal of oil in a curbside street drain located at 105 Street and 85 Avenue.

Rawlins adds they want to make sure they remediate the pond to their best ability.

“Especially with the impact to the fish, wildlife, and birds. It will be easier if the public gives us some space to let us work with the environmental consultant which we are using.”

County officials have no timeline as to when the pond will be re-opened.

However, if everything goes smoothly, Rawlins expects the pond to only be closed for a couple of days.

There are no public safety concerns.
