Chuckegg Creek wildfire forces more evacuations

May 29, 2019 | 4:16 PM

UPDATE: Mackenzie County says the area of evacuation has expanded for this wildfire, and now everyone in the area of La Crete Ferry Campground east to Range Rd. 164, and north and south of Highway 697 must evacuate immediately. Everyone evacuating this area must travel east on Highway 697 and evacuate to La Crete where a reception center has been set up..

The wildfire that forced the evacuation of High Level and area is displacing more people.

Mackenzie County has ordered anyone in the La Crete Ferry Campground to leave.

The Chuckegg Creek wildfire, still out of control and 150,000 hectares in size, burned across Highway 35 south of High Level Tuesday night.

Highway 697 going to the La Crete ferry is now closed.

Close to 5000 people remain out their homes in High Level and area.

Officials said in a news release that on Tuesday “The south part of the fire took a 10 km run towards Paddle Prairie.” They continue to assess what is happening around that community.

One hundred sixty-eight firefighters continue to work to protect homes and other properties in and around High Level.

Another 420 firefighters and 28 helicopters are fighting the blaze.

Hot, dry conditions and gusty winds have led to what fire watchers call a red-flag warning in much of northern Alberta’s forest.

The red-flag warning suggests there’s potential for fires to blow up in oreal forest areas.
