Air Quality Health Index off the charts Friday morning

May 31, 2019 | 6:10 AM

There is thick smoke in the air in the Grande Prairie area.

According to the Peace Airshed Zone Association, the Air Quality Health Index hit 26 in Grande Prairie and 36 in Beaverlodge. Anything 10 or higher is considered very high.

Environment Canada says A Special Air Quality Statement remains in place.

Individuals may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath.

If you have breathing difficulties you are encouraged to stay inside.

The thick, acrid smoke from the northern Alberta wildfires has drifted to points south, including Edmonton and Calgary.
