City and DTS to meet on Thursday to discuss future of service

Jun 4, 2019 | 11:35 AM

Administration with the City of Grande Prairie and the Disabled Transportation Society will be holding a closed-door meeting on Thursday, as they continue negotiations of how to continue operations of the service within the Swan City.

The City says in a release that its main focus at this time is to gain understanding of what the users of the service need, so that they can understand what is needed to support accessible transportation services.

The wishes for DTS continue to focus around the City overtaking operations, but the City is looking at all avenues before any final decision is made. Back in 2018, the City undertook a Handibus Feasibility Study, which then led to a recently issued RFI (Request for Information) to service providers to see if the service could be offered up for competitive bid. RFI’s are also being issued to explore other options for the future of the service.

DTS is continuing to operate on a Priority One level, meaning only wheelchair clients who need transit for medical, educational or employment reasons are served at this time, while all other services have been halted.

The biggest reason for that is they say the City has slashed the grant funding by $100,000. The City contends that they have offered $996,300 to DTS this year and have given the organization an advance of its third-quarter funding to help meet its financial obligations. They also claim to have raised funding by 26% since 2015.

The meeting is not open to the public, as no members of council will be present.
