UCP allowing municipalities to offer tax breaks for businesses

Jun 4, 2019 | 3:28 PM

The Alberta government has introduced legislation that would give municipalities new powers to provide tax breaks for business.

Municipalities are currently only allowed to cancel, refund or defer taxes based on hardship, with decisions made on a case-by-case basis.

But the new legislation would allow them to offer tax breaks for up to 15 years to businesses willing to set up in commercial or industrial areas of their town or city.

The United Conservative government says the aim it to give municipalities new tools to encourage economic development in commercial areas that are vacant, derelict, under-utilized or that may be contaminated.
