Wildfire Update: Keg River, Carcajou residents can return home today

Jun 5, 2019 | 2:04 PM

More residents of northern Alberta can head home today, as the mandatory evacuation order for Keg River and Carcajou within the County of Northern Lights, has been rescinded, effective at 10 a.m. this morning. The order has also been lifted for the area from the Twin Lakes Campground to the County’s northern border.

The Chuckegg Creek Wildfire remains out of control at nearly 276,000 hectares in size and residents who are returning need to be prepared to leave again, as an evacuation alert has been put in place. The fire west of Keg River has been brought under control with a full dozer guard in place. That fire is not expected to increase in size.

Residents of the Paddle Prairie Metis Settlement are still unable to assess the damage to their community, as fire crews continue to work to try and protect it , as the Chuckegg Creek fire has mostly surrounded the community.

Evacuation orders also remain in place for the following areas of the province:

  • Some areas of Mackenzie County (west of Bleu Creek, west of Blue Hills Rd. and north of Township Road 1030 and La Crete Ferry Campground to Peace River).
  • the Trout Lake area of the Peerless Trout First nation.
  • Wabasca-Desmarais, Bigstone Cree nation, Sandy Lake and Chipewyan Lake Village.
  • Steen River.

A total of eight wildfires continue to burn out of control around the province: Two of those are in the High Level Forest Area, five are in the Slave Lake Forest Area and one is in the Peace River forest area. A total 17 active wildfires still being fought.
