Grande Prairie Lacrosse Association hoping to bring back junior franchise

Jun 17, 2019 | 12:01 PM

Lacrosse continues to grow in the Swan City and next year Grande Prairie could bring a team back to the Junior level.

President of the Grande Prairie Lacrosse Association Ron Regnier explained where and what league the junior club would play in.

“The juniors all governed by the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League. We would play in probably Junior B Tier 3 for our first year. The great thing about junior is that you are guaranteed 16 games and eight of them are always home games.”

As of right now, Regnier notes they are currently reaching out to the junior-aged players to see if there was enough interest and, potentially, get a commitment.

If they do have enough of a commitment, Regnier says the next step will be heading to the RMLL’s AGM.

“We will then present. We will have a much stronger case for them to bring us back in the league if we have a certain amount of players who have paid a deposit, are serious about this, we have arena time, and we are ready to see lacrosse games in Grande Prairie.”

If Grande Prairie is able to get a junior lacrosse team back in the Swan City, Regnier believes this will help with the continued growth of the sport in the city and could also help with the Association getting a senior team back to the community.
