Indian Cabins under evacuation order, residents must travel to Northwest Territories

Jun 17, 2019 | 2:23 PM

Residents of Mackenzie County in the area of Indian Cabins have been put under a mandatory evacuation order.

The order was brought into effect at 10:55 a.m. today and residents are told to drive north on Highway 35 and go to the Northwest Territories.

The Jackpot Creek wildfire continues to burn out of control in that part of the province and was last recorded at just over 75,000 hectares in size. As of the latest update from Alberta Wildfire, 88 firefighters are currently battling the blaze, along side 10 helicopters and two pieces of heavy equipment.

Those residents join those of Paddle Prairie, who remain away from their community due to the Chuckegg Creek Wildfire, which also continues to burn out of control in the High Level Forest Area at over 295,000 hectares.

Conditions are continuing to work against firefighting efforts in that region today, as dry and windy conditions continue to help the fire spread.
