Local farmers helping hungry people again this year

Some Peace Country farmers have gotten together again this year to help out hungry people around the world.

The Bear Lake Growing Project has been around for several years.

It will see the net proceeds from a field of canola being grown near the top of Mercer Hill donated to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank.

Albrecht Scheidegger donated the use of some rented land for this year’s fundraiser.

“I decided to get involved. I enjoy working with other growers. There’s a group of us producers working on that and it’s a good cause. The (Canadian) Foodgrains (Bank), it gives the abundance that we have to other people.”

He explains what he likes about working with other producers.

“It’s just a good way to get to know people more because we see each other at meetings and elevators; but when you actually plan the crop, plan the fields, and organize the logistics, you get to know people on a deeper level. So, that part’s nice.”

Scheidegger says crops look really good so far this spring.

“Our germination on canola was the best I have seen in a long time. I think it was a bit later when we seeded and the soil was warm, so we had beautiful germination. So, it’s off to a great start at this point.”

Scheidegger says it is nice to give extra that we have to people who need it.
