Difficult return home for Paddle Prairie residents

Jun 21, 2019 | 5:42 AM

More than 700 residents of Paddle Prairie Metis Settlement were given the OK to return home yesterday after a wildfire evacuation order was lifted, but for some it was a difficult time.

Sixteen homes were destroyed by the massive Chuckegg Creek wildfire and another 15 were damaged.

Community members have been out of their homes for more than three weeks.

While residents were heading back to Paddle Prairie, about 200 other people had to leave their homes in Mackenzie County due to wildfires.

Provincial wildfire officials say altogether about 7,500 people are still out of their communities.
