Irvine holds narrow lead over Sutherland, Ridsdale after day one in High River

Jun 21, 2019 | 8:43 AM

It was a good opening night for Peace Country drivers at Guy Weadick Days, the WPCA event going through this weekend in High River.

Doug Irvine leads after the first run, posting a time of 1:18.94. However, that lead is quite narrow to say the least.

Kirk Sutherland posted a time just .03 of a second behind him, while Cody Ridsdale sits in third with a time of 1:19.05.

Grande Prairie’s Mitch Sutherland sits not far behind in fifth place, after posting a time of 1:19.23. Mike Vigen sits in 24th, while Chanse Vigen is in 32nd.

The leader after four days of aggregate will be crowned the champion of the event. Kurt Bensmiller is the two-time defending champion and is the overall points leader in the WPCA following his victory in Medicine Hat last weekend.

He currently sits in 21st place after Thursday’s heats.

Meanwhile the Western Chuckwagon Association is in Whitecourt this weekend for the Woodlands Rodeo. Erik Tremblay enters atop the driver standings, followed up by Dean Dreger and Todd McCracken. Racing begins tonight at 6, while racing on Saturday at 5 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
