Bezanson, Sturgeon Lake murder cases appear in Grande Prairie court

Jun 24, 2019 | 4:27 PM

Two murder cases were in Grande Prairie Provincial Court Monday.

A preliminary hearing for Randy Stephen Fiddler has been set for February 10-13, 2020.

He is facing a second-degree murder charge after the death of Myrna Fiddler at a rural home near Bezanson April 23. RCMP have called her death a homicide.

Fiddler will remain in custody until a bail review July 2 in Grande Prairie Court of Queen’s Bench.

Also, the two men charged in a Sturgeon Lake murder case made their first court appearances.

Allan Hamelin and Harlin Martineau have been charged with first degree murder, kidnapping, and assault with a weapon after the disappearance of Barry Goodswimmer, who was reported missing June 16. His body has not been found.

Hamelin and Martineau will remain in custody until their next court appearance July 15.

The Criminal Code of Canada says murder is considered first degree if it is planned and deliberate, a contracted killing, the murder of a peace officer, a death that occurs during a hijacking, sexual assault or kidnapping, killings that are done for the benefit of or at the direction of a criminal organization. or deaths that happened through criminal harassment, terrorist activity, or intimidation.

Murders that do not fit into any of those categories are considered second degree.

The Code says a conviction on either means a life sentence in prison.
