Dog gon’ good time, first Wiener Dog Derby to be held at Evergreen Park

Jul 5, 2019 | 6:09 AM

A new event has been added to the horse races at Evergreen Park July 21 – a Wiener Dog Derby.

Natalie Tremblay, Evergreen Park Wiener Dog Race Coordinator says there are wiener dog races at many tracks across North America, so they thought why not do it at Evergreen Park?

They are taking 24 entries and as of July 3 they only had six spots left.

“We are taking purebred dachshunds and dachshund mixes. They just have to look like a wiener dog,” she said.

The races will be 30 metres (98 feet) long and each dog will have a catcher and a releaser. Catchers can have toys to entice their dog, but not food.

“You never know, somebody else’s wiener dog might like what you have better.”

There will be three qualifying heats in between the horse races and the top three of each of those heats will go on to compete in the derby final. The winner of that will be crowned the top dog.

It’s $20 to enter your dog and 100 per cent of the entry fees will go to Bandaged Paws.

The fun doesn’t stop there. They are also doing a wiener dog costume contest that day. You do not have to pre enter for that, just show up with your dog in a costume.

To enter a dog in the derby visit the Facebook page Evergreen Park Wiener Dog Day 2019.

There, you can also check out the competition, as every day they will be featuring two dogs.

It’s free to attend the horse races at Evergreen Park all summer long, including the dog derby day.

Bandaged Paws is going to be at Evergreen Park July 21 and donations to their organization are appreciated.

Tremblay says a lot of people are really excited about the special race.

“We’re gonna have a wienie good time!” she said.
