Maxime Bernier to speak in Grande Prairie Wednesday

Jul 8, 2019 | 5:30 AM

As the federal election draws closer, one hopeful for Prime Minister is touring Alberta to spread the word about his newly formed party.

Maxime Bernier will be speaking in Grande Prairie on July 10 at the Pomeroy Hotel as part of a rally for the People’s Party of Canada.

Doug Burchill, who will be running for the Grande Prairie-Mackenzie MP seat with the party, says Bernier wants to hit areas that are often overlooked.

“He wants to come up to Grande Prairie. No other Prime Ministerial candidate has ever come up this way and talked to the people,” said Burchill. “He wants to talk right to the people and express his ideas and hear feedback.”

Bernier founded the party just this past August, after serving as a Conservative MP from Quebec since January of 2006 and filling several cabinet positions during that time. However, he left the party last year and now sits as an Independent.

That came just short of a year after he failed to secure the leadership of the Tories, losing the vote to Andrew Scheer.

Burchill, who will be running in his first election at any level this fall for the Grande Prairie-Mackenzie seat (currently held by Chris Warkentin), decided to join Bernier’s “grassroots” party. He will be formally introduced as the candidate at the event.

The event will be a town hall style engagement to discuss the party’s platforms and policies. It starts at 7:30.

“It’s going to be an event, more of a rally,” said Burchill. “He (Bernier) will come up and discuss the platform and take any questions and answer any of the concerns that people might have.”
