The nominations are in and the Peace Country will be well represented at the Canadian Country Music Association Awards this September.

Grande Prairie’s Tenille Townes has been nominated for four awards; Female Artist of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Single of the Year and Video of the Year.

Aaron Goodvin of Spirit River was nominated for Interactive Artist of the Year and High Valley, the duo from La Crete received a nomination for Group/Duo of the Year.

“I think it’s a huge thing, not only for the artists that were nominated, but as far as the young artists that are coming up through the Peace Country, this goes to show that national success, and even in the case of Tenille Townes, success in the U.S., is not off limits for people from where we are from,” said J.P. Pautonnier, Music Director and Afternoon Drive Host for Big Country 93.1 in Grande Prairie.

J.P. believes in the next few years there will be many more stories of success to tell.

“It’s just going to continue and I think we are going to hit a stretch here of some of the biggest, most successful times for Peace Country artists that we have ever seen in country music and the cool part is the success isn’t just in Canada. With the likes of all three (Tenille Townes, High Valley, Aaron Goodvin), they all have dealings down in the U.S. which is huge and they’re becoming big stars right in front of our eyes and it was all started with a seed planted here in the Peace Country.”

When it comes to Tenille Townes, J.P. describes her success as ‘massive’ and says as far as Canadian talent goes, these nominations really solidify her place as one of the top country artists in Canada.

“What we’re seeing is extremely special and I think she’s touched the lives of literally thousands and thousands of people in the Peace Country, not only through her charity work, but just being the person that she is.”

Townes has been touring with some of the biggest names in country music. She’s opened concerts for Little Big Town, Miranda Lambert and Dierks Bentley.

“Really she’s grown out of the Peace Country into one of the most talked about people in Nashville and the country music world,” he said. “It’s really international in scope and she is just going to continue to get bigger and bigger, because she is at her young age, one of the finest songwriters that there is in the entire genre.”

The award show will take place at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary on Sunday, September 8.
