Wood pellet plant being built in High Level

Jul 16, 2019 | 12:51 PM

A new wood pellet plant is being built in High Level.

Pinnacle Renewable Energy is working on the new facility that is going up next to the existing Tolko sawmill.

The company’s Leroy Reitsma says the plant will use by-products from the lumber industry to make the pellets.

“We take the wood, we mill it down to a powder which we dry, and then we compress it into energy pellets, which are just six millimetres in diameter pellets by, typically, about 20 millimetres long.”

The plant will use what he calls by-products of the lumber industry.

“Sawdust, bark, tree tops, off-species trees that end up being affected by the harvest. Basically, if it’s wood, we will try to turn it into this product.”

Reitsma explains that the pellets are used as an energy source.

“Those pellets will be shipped into the international markets with the rest of our production for coal displacement in international power markets.”

Reitsma says the target completion date for the new facility is the third quarter of next year. He adds it will create around 30 new jobs.
