Edmonton inmates face charges over ‘severe assault’

EDMONTON – Charges have been laid against four inmates at the Edmonton Institution following what police are calling a severe assault earlier this month.

Police say officers responded to a report of a stabbing at the maximum-security prison on July 12.

They say five inmates were involved in an altercation in the prison’s exercise yard.

Guards intervened to stop the assault, and a 32-year-old inmate was sent to hospital with serious injuries.

Police say he has since been released and is under medical care at the institution.
