RCMP offering water safety tips as part of National Drowning Prevention Week

Jul 23, 2019 | 6:43 AM

With the sun shining and the temperature heating up, residents of the Swan City and the Peace Country will be hitting the water more often.

Alberta RCMP recognize this and as part of National Drowning Prevention Week they are providing some safety tips for their provinces residents to they stay safe this summer.

The biggest tip which the RCMP are providing is to not operate any boat or watercraft under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

In 2017, drinking and boating accounted for close to 40% of boating related fatalities in the province.

Other tips include:

– make sure everyone on board, even experienced swimmers, are wearing life jackets.

– Bring emergency supplies like extra food, clothes, and a cell phone.

– Check the weather forecast before going on the water. Changing weather conditions can be extremely dangerous while on the water.

– Know the area you will be operating in and share your itinerary with someone, so that if there is an emergency you can be found quickly.

57 people have drowned in Alberta in the past 3 years and 67% have occurred on lakes or rivers.
