Development permits, lower speed limit to be discussed by Beaverlodge town council August 12

Jul 26, 2019 | 5:30 AM

Beaverlodge town council has some things to discuss at a special town council meeting called for August 12.

That includes a couple development permits plus the idea of lowering the speed limit in town to 30 km/h.

CAO Karen Gariepy says Beaverlodge council usually does not meet in August.

“We’ve received some applications for a land use bylaw amendment. So, in other words, we’re going to hold a public hearing because of the land use bylaw amendment. We don’t want to keep our residents and our businesses in town waiting until September. So, we’re calling a special meeting for the month of August.”

She adds there will not be a decision on lowering the speed limit to 30 km/h from 50 made at this meeting as public input is still being gathered.

“So right now, we are just getting dialogue started as to if you do support it or don’t support it. We just provided some facts that if, for example, a youth or a child is hit at 30 km/h, runs into the street, and is hit at 30 km/h, the rate of survival is much, much higher than if they ran into the street at 50 km/h.”

There will be other opportunities for residents have their say.

“We do have a survey that’s available and it is posted on Facebook right now. So, if you go to the Town of Beaverlodge Facebook page, or you go to our web site, you can go on and complete the survey that way.”

Gariepy says they will also talk to residents about this at the Beaverlodge Fair, set for August 16 and 17.

The meeting on August 12 starts at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers at the Town Office.
