Final day to apply for spot on Minister’s Youth Council

If you had the chance to speak with the Provincial Education Minister, what would you say?

Junior and senior high school student’s who would like to have their voices heard on issues at the provincial level are encouraged to apply to be part of the Minister’s Youth Council.

The council is comprised of 32 students from across Alberta that meet three times a year, in Edmonton, to provide their insight and perspective into educational issues.

Grande Prairie MLA Tracy Allard says this is a great way for students to participate in provincial government and become an active voice on educational issues.

“Particularly for the student, it’s a developmental opportunity for them to experience government, to learn negotiation skills, to participate in the discussion about what matters to them in education,” said Allard. “We really want to engage youth, in their own development of their outcomes and for them to have a voice in what happens in education.”

Adding to that, she emphasized the importance of having a voice for Grande Prairie and the rest of the Peace country.

“I would just love to have Grande Prairie at the table,” said Allard. “We contribute so much to the province economically and I think we have much more than that to contribute, in terms of our creativity and innovative ideas.”

This is a council that has had Peace region representation before, as Sheena Noskey from the Grande Prairie Public School District and Broenyn Armstrong-Lettis from the Holy Family Catholic Regional Division in Peace River served last year.

Those interested in doing so need to have their application sent in by end of day today (Wednesday). The application can be found here.
