Shots fired report leads to crash east of Red Deer, ASIRT investigating

Aug 1, 2019 | 9:47 AM

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is now involved in the investigation of a police chase through parts of central Alberta on Wednesday.

Blackfalds RCMP say they were responding to a shots fired complaint north of that town at 12:35 p.m. The vehicle they were looking for, a sports car, was located in Red Deer.

A pursuit was initiated by Red Deer detachment, but was quickly called off in the interest of public safety.

At 1:45 p.m., the same vehicle was located on Highway 815 near Joffre by RCMP members in an unmarked vehicle.

Shortly after the RCMP activated their emergency equipment, the vehicle was struck by an uninvolved truck travelling eastbound on Highway 11 (east of Red Deer).

The occupants of the truck were not injured.

“The Director of Law Enforcement has been notified and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has been directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding police conduct. The RCMP remains the lead investigating agency on the events leading up to the serious incident, with ASIRT having carriage of the review of police actions,” a release states.

RCMP or ASIRT are yet to provide any further information on charges.
